I Would Not Have Voted Yes
I would not offer a yes vote to any Charter School until it put in place plans to establish a governing Local School Council, a body of accountability just like every other school in Chicago has.
Local School Councils are unique to Chicago.
There is nothing like them in the rest of the entire country.
Instead of one board ruling with total authority over schools with differing and unique needs, Chicago has the Local School Councils.
I think of them as miniature Boards of Education elected to their specific school.
I believe the first Elected Board of Education must work closely with empowering these local school councils.
Charter Schools, if they are to exist at all in Chicago, must at the very least hold themselves to the same standards of accountability and transparency as every other Chicago Public School.
They need to establish Local School Councils inline with Illinois statute.
I would say this should be accomplished by the next local school council election.
I would make funding contingent upon this success.
